Frequently asked questions
What is the price per person for food?
Unfortunately there is no simple answer to this question. As every event and client is different Roots customizes each and every menu to best suite the needs of our clientele.
Menu pricing is determined by the menu items selected, the cost of those ingredients and the labor to produce those items. Pricing may also be impacted by seasonal availability and the venue your event is being held due to logistical considerations.
We try our best to work with every budget but as a "from scratch" kitchen specializing in farm to table fine dining there will always be someone cheaper. The old adage you get what you pay for rings true with catering.
To give you a better idea of pricing, our minimum menu cost is $40 per person. Most clients end up between $50-$60 per person but we've seen $120+ menus as well.
Do we get to sample food?
Absolutely! We offer private tastings throughout the year.
If you're contracted for a date at one of our affiliate facilities your tasting is complimentary.
If you're still looking for a venue or are contracted with a non-affiliate we do charge a $75.00 tasting fee which is applied towards your balance if you decide to book with us.
Can you accommodate special diets?
Absolutely! As a "from scratch" kitchen we offer full menu customization all the way down to each ingredient. We frequently build menus with GF, DF or Vegan options. We've even produced menus that are entirely Ketogenic. We'll gladly work around any and all dietary considerations!
Do you offer kids meals
We do indeed. Our kids meals for ages 12 and under are just as customizable as the adult's. We frequently offer gourmet mac & cheese, sliders and personal flatbread pizzas. Please note there is a reduced rate for kids meals but it is determined by the menu selections.
Can you provide event staff?
Roots is a full service caterer. We're not only able to provide staff but we can also assit with rentals, equipment, setup and clean-up.
Do you offer buffet or "family-style"?
Generally our company will serve only plated meals vs a buffet or "family-style". There are multiple reasons for this. First, we find that the food quality suffers from being on a buffet or sitting on a table for an extended period of time. With a plated meal the food goes from the pan, to the plate, to the patron in the shortest amount of time possible. A plated meal is also the most cost effective for you as the customer as we're able to determine precisely how much food is required for your event so there is minmal waste.
You may encounter some caterers who only offer buffet and want to charge a premium for a plated meal, perhaps they sight additional staffing costs or other expenses. Generally speaking, these caterers offer buffets for a reason. 1) Their food is inexpensive and portion control/waste is not an issue. 2) Their company is unable to provide the appropriate amount of staffing for a seated service. 3) They're inexperienced with or unable to provide a timely dinner service for a large number of guests. 4) They want to drop-off their product and take no responsibility for serving or clearing.
Roots sources a significant amount of our meats, vegetable and cheeses right here in Pennsylvania and our products are always fresh, never frozen. Our food cost comprises a significant portion of our pricing and waste can get expensive. Roots maintains a staff of more than 30 servers and bartenders, enough to host 2-3 events per day. We average 20 minutes to serve 100 guests their dinner, much faster than a buffet line. It's your big day, the last thing you want is to worry about is setting up before or cleaning up after dinner, with Roots, you won't have to.
